Senior Associate
Rui is an experienced litigator with a focus on complex insurance disputes and advice and financial services regulatory matters. She also has experience in class action litigation and regulatory investigations.
Rui regularly advises clients in the financial services, energy and resources, and construction sectors. She grasps factually and technically complex matters quickly and provides pragmatic and commercial advice. She has a strong track record of efficiently and cost effectively handling and resolving disputes for her clients.
Highlights of Rui’s experience include:
- Acting for a government corporation (the operator of Australia’s largest electricity network) in representative proceedings arising out of bushfires.
- Acting for directors of a manufacturing company and their insurer in proceedings brought by the liquidator and company over alleged breaches of directors’ duties.
- Acting for an Australian distribution company and its insurer in a funded class action concerning the importation and distribution of combustible cladding.
- Advising a significant telecommunications company in relation to contractual disputes in connection with a long-term outsourcing contract for telecommunication services.
- Advising an investment bank in relation to regulatory investigations into suspected market manipulation offences by employees in Hong Kong, Japan and Australia.
- Advising an investment bank in relation to a regulatory investigation into suspected insider trading offences by its employees.
Before joining Hazelbrook Legal, Rui practised in a leading global law firm and a leading Australian law firm. She holds a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Economics (First Class Honours and University Medal) from the University of Newcastle.
Rui is a strong supporter of pro bono legal services and has spent considerable time volunteering at community legal centres, the Federal Court Self Representation Service and wills clinics for First Nations Peoples.
Away from work Rui wrangles kids and a rescue dog with separation anxiety.
